This book begins with an improbable gift — a spark that crossed 9,000 miles to find me.
In its quiet arrival, it led me back to a dream I had set aside decades ago. And long before that, another unexpected kindness set me on the path I still walk today. These gifts ask only one thing of us: to hold them with gratitude and carry their light forward when we are able.
And so, in honor of the people whose generosity shaped my life, and in gratitude to the readers holding this book in their hands, I am donating all author royalties from this book to children’s literacy programs, a cause that has been close to my heart for nearly thirty years.
It feels right that the gift which returned me to my words might help place words into the hands of children.

Opening a Book is Like Opening
a Present
For me, books have always felt like presents waiting to be opened. I am reminded of this every time I watch my grandchildren lose themselves in a story.
There is a magic in those moments — the way a tale can open the windows of their imagination, give them the language to express their world, and strengthen the essential skills that guide them as they grow into responsible citizens.
My grandchildren are fortunate. Many children are not.
In one study conducted by the literacy program I work with, we confirmed a sobering truth: children who cannot read at grade level by third grade face a significantly higher risk of incarceration later in life.
No child’s future should be shaped by the absence of a book.
My hope is that through this small offering, the spark and generosity that reached me will flow outward once more. A single book placed in the hands of a child in need can transform more than a moment. It can redirect a life.
